The Lime Rock Foundation, a 501(c)(3) incorporated in 2022 in the state of Rhode Island, was formed primarily to provide funds for the purpose of restoring, maintaining, and preserving the historically and architecturally significant buildings, the clubhouse, and the supporting marine elements, that are all part of what is today the
Ida Lewis Yacht Club.
In 1853, under the authorization of the United States Government, a lighthouse was built on Lime Rock, a small rock outcropping approximately 100 yards offshore at the southern entrance to Newport Harbor, east of Fort Adams. Also on the Rock and in close proximity to the original building are a few small outbuildings.
Established in 1854, originally as Lime Rock Light, the structure serves as a reminder of Newport’s maritime heritage in a town whose growth and popularity has always been closely linked to the sea.
The lighthouse was discontinued in 1928, and the building was sold shortly after for use as the headquarters of the
Ida Lewis Yacht Club.
The Ida Lewis Rock Lighthouse is registered in the National Register of Historic Places with reference number 87001700.
